The first thing you should be having is your registered National Health insurance (NHI)and it makes all the rest too easy.
Make sure you have this insurance registered to as soon as you land in Japan and if you have plans for a longer stay.
Secondly if you do not know Japanese, Here you go call up the English help line 0352858181.
They would guide you with the nearest English speaking Doctor.Mind it the line is open like 9 AM - 8 PM.
Once you have the address, just visit the suggested hospital/clinic and show the NHI card. Then mostly you would be given a check list to mark your symptoms and you would be consulted in a few minutes.
Most cases the checklist gives a diagnosis to the doctor and he confirms with an x-ray if required and suggests further checks soon as required. At the end you will have to pay about 30% of the whole charges. Pretty interesting is that this insurance is a life saver in the costliest city on Earth. Believe me i visited about 7 doctors and spend about 7000 yen on medicine and doctor and x-ray fees.
Only problem is that it is tough to get ourselves convinced with the brocken communications we can have with the doctors.
But still its worth it. So if you are not on NHI yet make it to the ward office and register and you are completely covered till 70% on whatever you do in the medical field :)
The consultations are so procedural that they even give you the specs and snapshot of the medicine you would be taking:)
Well that is indeed something to Smile even when you are not completely well. Of course my friends had adviced me of a shift form another insurance to NHI and now i am convinced about the convenience.
